A Good Morning Routine Can Set the Tone for a Calm Day

Updated: Jun 16, 2022

Mornings can be a hectic time. This is especially true when you're responsible for getting others, like kids, ready for their day and out the door on time. Starting your day out feeling frazzled, cranky, and overwhelmed isn't good for anyone. A simple solution to make things a whole lot less stressful is to create a morning ritual for yourself that you perform each and every day. Let me explain to you what I mean by this and how a good morning routine can set the tone for a calm day.

What is a Morning Routine?

A morning routine is a series of actions you take every morning to help set the tone for your day. It's a type of self-care that allows you to begin each day feeling energized, relaxed, and purposeful. Morning routines are personal and unique to your needs. They usually involve activities meant to calm or revive you, such as writing in a journal, meditating, exercising, or creating a to-do list. Whatever a morning routine consists of for you, the purpose is to help you gain a sense of preparation, control, and calm, as you face your day.

Benefits of a Morning Routine

There are lots of great things that can be gained from this practice. For one, having a morning routine allows you to set a positive tone for the day ahead of you. You can gain a sense of purpose and empowerment by engaging in a particular ritual each day. This is because setting a ritual requires you to make proactive decisions and produce the mindset to make it happen. Additionally, taking time for yourself on a regular basis, particularly at the start of the day, can give you a better outlook on your life and skills to cope with your problems. The sense of calm and control gained through your morning routine will carry over into the rest of your day, maintaining your mood as you encounter obstacles. If you add things like a healthy breakfast and exercise to your new routine, you'll also face the day more energized and ready to go.

Morning Routine Suggestions

Your morning routine should be tailored to activities that you choose based on your needs and what will nourish your soul. Plan to allot around 30 minutes (more or less depending on your lifestyle), to this routine. If you need some suggestions to get started, here are mine. First of all, begin the day with some journaling, or “morning pages”. Writing about your thoughts and feelings, especially with the stream of consciousness you’ll feel first thing in the morning, can be deeply healing. Another suggestion is to make time for exercise. The extent of the workout doesn't matter, so long as you move your body. Taking your movement outside can add calm and perspective. From here, you may enjoy some meditation, listening to music, reading for leisure, or enjoying your favorite morning beverage or meal. Feel free to make your routine out of whatever resonates with you most. Some people start their morning routine the night before, by writing down a tentative to-do list and schedule for the following day. This might seem a bit over-the-top, but it can help to release the tension of uncertainty by providing you with a framework for the day ahead.

Remember, the key to reaping the benefits of a morning routine is to make it a regular practice.
